My beansprouts are 4 days old but they seem to be getting many roots. There's one single tail but I can see a number of roots growing on the sprout near the beginning of the tail. Why is this?

This is a natural stage of the rootlet growth - which usually happens underground so 1) its something you dont usually see so its new to you 2) not a result of exposure to sunlight.

Read this great overview by sproutpeople on mung beans: http://www.sproutpeople.com/seed/print/mung.html

I would mostly worry about sliminess and bad smells and ANY sort of thing growing that is not a mung bean.

If there is any doubt, dump it! Be obsessive about cleaning your equipment (some suggest slight bleach application with lots of rinsing) so that you can feel confident about your sprouts!

Nika, Thanks for your reply. Yes, it starts out like peach fuzz but then the next day, you see some of this turn into tiny roots. I am sprouting mung beans. Why does it do this? I didn't limit the sunlight. Could this be why?

Fan: Is like a peach fuzz? Super tiny and feathery?

This is a natural part of some seed's new roots. Which type of seed are you sprouting?
